Relationships in Good Country People, by Flannery OConnor Essay

Flannery O'Connor's "Good Country People" is a story told through the examination of the relationships between the four main characters. All of the characters have distinct feelings about the others, from misunderstanding to contempt. Both Joy-Hulga, the protagonist, and Manley Pointer, the antagonist, are multi-faceted characters. While all of the characters have different levels of complexity, Joy-Hulga and Manley Pointer are the deepest and the ones with the most obvious facades. The first character we encounter is Mrs. Freeman. She is the wife of Mrs. Hopewell's tenant farmer. She is a very outspoken woman, and "she [can] never be brought to admit herself wrong on any point" (O'Connor 180). Mrs. Freeman is a gossip; she is nosy and she "ha[s] a special fondness for the details of secret infections, hidden deformities, assaults upon children" (O'Connor 183). Mrs. Freeman wants to be an authority on everyone else's personal business. She is never shy of sharing the details of her daughters' lives with Mrs. Hopewell. I get the impression that she tells anyone that she meets the intimate details of the lives of Glynese, Carramae, Mrs. Hopewell, and Joy-Hulga. Being a poor tenant farmer's wife, her only weapon is her speech (Enjoiras 36). In order to compete with Mrs. Hopewell, she must be constantly on the look-out for ways to subtly one-up her in the course of their conversations. Asals describes their conversations as "hackneyed one-upmanship" (99). For example, the way they speak to each other one rnorning goes like this: "Everybody is different," Mrs. Hopewell said. "Yes, most people is," Mrs. Freeman said. "It takes all kinds to make the world." "I always said it did myself.... ...f the story proves it. The facades they put on are as essential to "Good Country People" as the mindless conversations between Mrs. Freeman and Mrs. Hopewell. The relationships between these four characters are what make "Good Country People" such a literary success.       Works Cited Asals, Frederick. Flannery O'Connor : The Imagination of Extremity. Difficulties disabling growth of market oriented system in China Essay

Difficulties disabling growth of market oriented system in China Introduction   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The total achievements of the ongoing social economic reforms in china are very astounding, China from among the poorest nations up to 1976 when Mao Zedong died. Since then, the economy of china has grown rapidly to assume the second position of the biggest economy in the. The rapid growth of the china’s economy has brought sufficient resources to the government to further development and also has rescued million citizens from abject poverty. It is amazing to see the success and speed of the china miracle. The rapid development in china has attracted attentions worldwide in the recent years. The consequences of various aspects of the rise of china ,starting from its military muscles and expanding influence to its expanding energy supply demand, are be mostly debated within china and the international community. Thus it is crucial to correctly comprehend the achievement of china and its wide path toward higher development (Harry J Wa ters, 1997).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   China has continuously faced many challenges to accomplish its performance in developing as in other developed states. Since 2001, commercial banks have been poorly allocating its funds disorderly. This has been a severe problem in china. The Chinese banking system has been a problem on the way has allocated funds.. The private business has relied on the informal finance for a long time. This has affected the success of the private sector. This situation is caused not only by banking system but also is due to capital market. The banks could have solved this challenge if it had lent out loans to the private sectors enterprises with a reasonable interest rate. The lack of reliable corporate credit information made it difficult for commercial banks to assess the risk of lending the loans (Wang, 1990).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The china government improved the legal environment, which occurred remarkably. China made changes to this legal system in accordance with the country’s accession. Even though, the law was so good in the country did not mean that market system was in phase. In fact, the banking system was deteriorating on the way was performing their duties. The senior executive specified some issues basing his argument on banking sector such as absence of regulations and rules on credit registry, the underdeveloped businesses liquidation law, the inability in criminal investigation for financial theft and irregularities(Rotberg, 2008). The PBC senior executive also launched the study project with association of World Bank and other monetary financial institutions (Wang, 1990). The main task was to propose a series of reforms to attain a new framework on the market system. The private sectors concerning the law on the banking system proceeded to the court with an aim to get loans from commercial banks with reasonable interest rates (Wang, 1990). This did not even succeed as planned by the complaints.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Nowadays when the commercial banks require enforcing their bill of rights to the collateral, they face many challenges. This occurs when they try to register some projects system, which they have to intervene with the court. The banks lack motivation of reconciliation therefore has to intervene with the court. They usually face trouble enforcing court decisions due to local government interference (Rotberg, 2008).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   China has faced numerous challenges affecting the whole government and even the development of the country. In china, there has been fraud reports and corruption in banking sector. It is not of necessity whether financial frauds are on the increase or whether more crimes are reported and uncovered. There are three main challenges facing the banking system in China, which are high-technologically financial offences; the use of criminally obtained money to corrupt officials in order to run away punishment and to keep away from regulation, and funds crimes report with a more sophisticated means, global focus. The Chinese government is increasing institutional mechanisms for exposing and eradicating financial crime. This has been a prolonged challenge of fraud and corruption affecting the banking system in China (Wang, 1990).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The Chinese commercial banks’ strength to vie with foreign banks was posed in the context of three areas. These areas are in the domestic financial markets, in the open and developed domestic markets for future, and in world markets. Therefore, this is not easy for foreign banks to enter into the Chinese market. Banks involve in local currency where its mission does not move forward. This is much more expensive than simply opening branches (Rotberg, 2008). This affected the market oriented system negatively.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   China indeed has achieved most of the objectives it set in 1978.it has improved significantly the well being of the citizens although it’s economic development has often been uneven and narrow. The last twenty seven years of growth and reforms has presented to the world the size of its, labour force, purchasing, creativity, commitment to development and the level of national cohesion. The contribution of china to the whole world as a way of growth will be ground breaking after mobilization of all of its resources. China has struggled with economic development mostly because of its population since a small challenge in its social development or economic when spread over a vast population become a huge problem. The most important strategic choice the government of china has made was to accept the economic globalization instead of separating itself from it .during 1970s the great signs of economic globalization and technological revolu tion was unfolding with huge momentum when Beijing held the trend and overturned the practices of Cultural Revolution (Kiichiro Fakasaku et al , 1999).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Based on the judgment of the development, the president of china alongside other great leaders in the government chose to take up the historic chance and shift the focus of their undertakings on the domestic development and hence tapping in to the international ones .they enforced the system of household contracting in the rural areas hence opening up fourteen coastal cities thus bringing in the economic period take off. Once again, china invoked a strategic because of the financial crisis that was rampant in. Asia and the continued struggles against globalization the decision of china to take part in economic globalization that it was facing was a great challenge .by clearly considering the advantages and the disadvantages related to economic openness and getting lessons from the history, the leaders in china decided to expanded china even more by deepening home economic reforms and world trade organization   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The leadership of china has been striving to improve the relation with the whole world as their pursue their objective of rising in peace despite the downs and up the relationship of china and the united states for many years together with other dramatic alterations in the worldwide politics like the death of the soviet union. The leader in china has stuck to the fact that there are more good opportunities than problems for china in the international market today.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   With respect to the strategic plans of china, it will take 45 years from today before it can be termed a modernized, medium level grown country. China will encounter several challenges before it get to 2050 mostly because of it’s over population, environmental pollution and lack of coordination among the two key factors of economic and social development. Another great challenge chain must encounter is clearly shown in series of tension that the government officials must deal with. The most common one are the gross domestic product growth and also social progress, between increasing job opportunities and upgrading technology, also the leaders are not sure whether to foster urbanization or expanding agricultural areas and others .to be able to solve all these dilemmas successfully, several properly coordinated policies are required to foster development which is more balanced and faster.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   China is continuously losing its ample due to economic development and erosion that has swept the most top layer which is essential for crop production. The government of china is looking forward to add more energy creation capacity from other sources apart from oil and coal and is shifting their focus more on alternative energy development and nuclear sources. The major problem which are associated with setting up nuclear facilities and to maintain them .they are charged with the responsibility of putting heavy boundary the prevent radiation leakage which otherwise would cause terminal diseases such as cancer. Several other factors are converging to decelerate the growth and development .the debt overhang resulting from the stimulus program, slow recovery of the partners trading with china and industrial overcapacity. The economic growth in china has benefited eastern and the southern region more than the region. This has led north to inc reased disparity between south and north .the agricultural activity in has been left behind. Many farmers are struggling to make cater for their daily bread. Consequently this kind of imbalance has favored migration of workers to south china. It is struggling hard to fix this regional inequality (Shahid Yusuf, 2008). References Fukasaku, K., Mello, L. Harassment And Discrimination Of Homosexuals Education Essay

Homosexuals are capable to more harassment and favoritism than any other minority because straight persons frequently view homosexualism as a pick. Harmonizing to Charlie Bradley, a newsman for Associated Content, homophiles are frequently the mark of violent hatred offenses because of homophobia, dogmatism, spiritual persecution, fright and ignorance. Such ill will, if non controlled, can take to violence such as hate offenses and self-destruction. Harmonizing to Janet Fontaine, one in three stripling self-destructions is caused by issues with sexual individuality. Students frequently have emotional, societal and psychological issues because they do non hold the same protection from torment as heterosexual pupils. Homosexuals are four to five times more likely to go down than straight persons when covering with issues with their gender. Adolescents spend two-thirds of their twenty-four hours at school, so jobs like torment at school will go important adequate to impact the remainder of their day-to-day life. My solution to this job is to supply protection and guidance of LGBT pupils in our secondary public school systems. There are several ways to carry through this, such as making a safe zone or a gay/straight confederation, one-on-one guidance with a professionally trained counsellor to help LGBT pupils with their peculiar state of affairss, recommending active protection from instructors, parents, and decision makers and making policies to protect these pupils from favoritism and torment. Exposing striplings to a support system will let them to construct healthy relationships, non merely in school but besides in mundane life. A better apprehension of who precisely is a â€Å" sexual minority † is the footing for understanding issues which LGBT pupils experience. â€Å" Sexual minority † in this essay is defined as any stripling with a sexual individuality that stands in resistance to rigorous heterosexualism. Anastasia Hansen describes LGBT pupils as anyone who identifies as sapphic, homosexual, bisexual, or transgender, engages in homosexual behaviour, or experiences same-sex attractive force ( Hansen 1 ) . Identifying as a homosexual, nevertheless, can take to persecution. Further, I find a better apprehension of what constitutes strong-arming to be good to acknowledging the difference between â€Å" badgering † and torment. Dan Olweus, who developed the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, defines strong-arming in his book Bullying: What We Know and What We Can Make every bit, â€Å" A individual is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over clip, to negative actions on the portion of one or more other individuals, and he or she has trouble supporting himself or herself. † Strong-arming leads to societal and physiological issues every bit good as force. On February 12, 2008, Brandon McInerney told another pupil to â€Å" state good-bye to Larry because you will ne'er see him once more. † Larry King, an openly homosexual pupil, was sitting in the E.O. Green School computing machine lab when McInerney shot him twice in the caput at blunt scope. Two yearss subsequently, King died in a local infirmary after being on life-support for several yearss. McInerney had harassed King in the yesteryear ; the school ne'er stepped in to set a halt to the torment. Cases like this are what make people think, â€Å" Why did n't anyone protect him? How can we forestall this from go oning to our kids? † It is the occupation of instructors, decision makers, and staff to actively listen to how pupils talk to each other. A individual of authorization must do it really clear that torment is unacceptable and will be purely punished. They must protect our pupils. Teachers spend more clip with our kids than any other decision maker in schools and they must play an active function in protecting our LGBT pupils from strong-arming and torment. The hours each twenty-four hours that they spend with our pupils gives them equal clip to measure a kid ‘s province of head. They must pay attending to what our pupils are stating and making to each other. This would forestall tease and torment from intensifying to battles and assault. With the work burden a instructor experiences, this is frequently a really hard undertaking. Teachers merely must listen to a kid ‘s ailment of being bullied and take action ( Birkett, Espelage, Koeing 991 ) . If a instructor finds a pupil is holding a job with another pupil, a instructor needs to instantly inform the parents and decision makers. The following class would be disciplinary action. The instructor so can make up one's mind whether the LGBT pupil should have extra aid through guidance. Students must accommodate to a batch of force per unit areas. LGBT pupils, in peculiar, trade with normal equal force per unit area every bit good as issues of being a sexual minority. Students of a sexual minority are pressured towards heterosexual relationships because that is what is perceived to be normal. Students may deny their gender, isolate themselves, and experience depression. Students with reding place positive ways to pass on feelings and are more disposed to develop healthy relationships ( Zubernis and Snyder 2 ) . It is a counsellor ‘s function to make a safe environment at school and protect all LGBT pupils from the frequently hostile homophobic political orientation that other pupils and instructors possess. A counsellor can recommend alteration in the current policies a school possess to explicitly protect LGBT pupils from torment, favoritism, and force. Teachers should work with parents in protecting our pupils. Parents should besides actively listen to their kids. If a kid complains of being bullied, they should reach the instructor and decision makers to discourse what should be done to relieve the job ( Olweus ) . Stairss should be taken to advocate both pupils involved and disciplinary action should be taken. At times, instructors and decision makers deny there is a job. This inactive attitude will let the torment to intensify to violent hate offenses and the â€Å" bully † would see that is behavior is acceptable and go on. If the school decision makers refuse to take action, I would propose the parent contact school board members to recommend alteration in school policies. Parents and instructors can protect an single pupil in their schoolroom, but they do non ever have the power to alter regulations and ordinances to protect all pupils. Administrators must recommend for regulations sing torment to protect all pupils, including LGBT pupils. Administrators should besides back up pupils in making nines, confederations and particular involvement groups to back up LGBT pupils. I have found in my research a deficiency of published composing about how a pupil or decision maker can physically amend or alter policies to protect LGBT pupils. In malice of deficiency of published authorship, The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program was developed by the authorities of Norway to make an intercession plan ; it was studied on much of the population. The plan began by developing parents on how to acknowledge when your kid is being bullied. They made a program of the school so there would be no blind-spots for strong-arming outside a instructor ‘s ticker. If a kid continued to hassle other kids, he or she was removed from the school, given behavior alteration preparation, and transferred to another school. After 20 months, at the terminal of the survey, the Norse authorities confirmed that strong-arming jobs were reduced by about 50 per centum. A instructor can besides help in the organisation of nines and confederations giving pupils a â€Å" safe infinite † to travel to. A Gay/Straight Alliance would give homosexual and heterosexual pupils a topographic point to develop positive relationships in a merriment, mellow environment. Gay/Straight Alliances give LGBT pupils a â€Å" safe infinite † to have equal mediation and guidance. These plans are unfastened to any pupil who identifies as an LGBT pupil or has an involvement in back uping other LGBT pupils and altering policies that do non back up and protect LGBT pupils from favoritism and torment ( Lee 20 ) . Harmonizing to a survey done by Eugene Wall of University of Denver, there are a figure of ways all pupils benefit from Gay/Straight Alliances. In his survey, he found the dropout rate, general torment, sexual torment, the feeling of an insecure environment, transporting of arms, and frequent absences are higher in schools without Gay/Straight Alliances than schools with them ( Wall 5-7 ) . Gay/Straight Alliances frequently have school patrons who have particular preparation to help LGBT pu pils develop positive attitudes toward their gender. These counsellors are normally trained in psychological science and possible gender surveies. These counsellors assist pupils with school and calling advice every bit good as issues with their gender. The Gay/Straight Alliance patron would besides be available to measure an LGBT pupil ‘s province of head. If a pupil becomes down or experiences anxiousness, the patron could find if he or she is in demand of extra support through guidance. Patrons will besides hold an active function as an militant in altering policies to protect LGBT pupils. Detailss of policies protecting pupils from favoritism are frequently wide. Most policies province that pupils can non be discriminated against based on their race, ethnicity, faith, etc. The â€Å" etc, † nevertheless, does non ever include LGBT pupils. Students in schools that do non possess policies to protect LGBT pupils are more likely to hold cases of torment and force. Chesir-Teran and Hughes besides claim that pupils of schools that have organisation and policies to protect them have fewer studies of torment and force and pupils are â€Å" more likely to comprehend their school environment as safe, tolerant, and respectful toward a sexual minority person † ( Chesir-Teran and Hughes 3 ) . This feeling of regard and safety is what encourages a pupil to go on to keep good classs and attend school on a regular basis. Students who are involved in a positive environment are less likely to develop depression, anxiousness, and psychological jobs. Gay/Straight Alliance and reding give LGBT pupils a safe topographic point when they find grownups they can swear. Schools that possess policies to protect pupils have fewer cases of favoritism, torment, and violent hatred offenses. Merely when we wholly change the manner decision makers control their pupils and schools will LGBT pupils experience wholly safe within their school walls. With aid from pupils, instructors, and decision makers, schools can go the safe, comfy larning environment it is meant to be.

Bollywood and Gender

Research Proposal Aim: To study and compare the role of women in some of the women centric Hindi films released between 1980 to 1990 and 2000 and 2010. Objective: To study the issues of gender, caste, development that were perceived in Indian cinema then and now in women centric films. A comparative study about the representation of women in Indian cinema then and now in women centric films. Scope: There are a numerous women centric films that are created in diverse languages around the world. When we focus even on one specific type, we get to know about the culture and thought process of that specific region. Also, a strong statement emerges out of the analysis which is a reflection of the prevailing ideologies in the society. This paper will be mark a statement on the thought process, beliefs of the people especially for the women. These beliefs systems and ideologies will be compared through women centric Bollywood movies that were released between 1980’s to 1990’s and 2000 to 2010. The scope can be extended to many women centric movies made in various languages other than Hindi. One can also include the earliest of the eras for a detailed comparison and in-depth study. Not only a comparison on the issues like gender and caste but also a comparison on other issues like lifestyle, costumes, movie posters etc can be done. Limitations: This paper is limited only to Bollywood films because of the language constraints. Also, only two decades have been chosen since the comparison and study would be possible with a limited number of films to study. Also, from each decade four women centric films are chosen and then studied thoroughly. Followed by is a detailed analysis of the movie based on the issues of Gender, caste, development, ideologies. Research Question: What is the difference in the representation of women portrayed earlier (1980-1990) and that which is shown now (2000-2010)? †¢ What are the factors that have affected the change in the representation of women in Hindi cinema esp. between the 1980- 1990 and 2000-2010? And how is the transition identified? †¢ Was the image of women shown in the movies of 1980-1990 stronger, bolder than tho se shown now (2000-2010)? Introduction: Confirming Aristotle’s view of art as an imitation of life, gender discrimination in the Hindi film industry does indeed reflect the bias that exists in Indian society. The gender ratio in India is heavily skewed in the favor of males (1. 08 male(s)/female) (from CIA’s publication). Thus, Indian moviegoers are presumed to be mostly men—roughly between the age of 15 to 34 years. These moviegoers, according to an all-India survey by a research organization, enjoy mindless comedies. Such thinking dominates cinematic expression in one of the world’s largest centers of film production. The Indian entertainment industry stands at $10 billion today and is expected to grow at 18 percent per annum compounded annually over the next two years (Economic Times). An average Indian spends approximately 4. 6 percent of disposable income on movie watching in theaters. And because issue-based films are not a favorite with the masses, a producer opts for subjects with more appeal so that he or she can recuperate the huge investments involved in film production. Even female filmmakers do not risk funding for their films by focusing on women-centric subjects. At New York’s iView Film Festival held in 2009, which explored gender and sexuality issues, filmmakers and actors on the panel were asked to comment on the presentation of social issues through Indian films. Zoya Akhtar, the filmmaker of  Luck By Chance (2009), and a panel member commented on the female protagonist in her film saying that, â€Å"The character could have been any; the fact that she is a woman is a coincidence. † But because the film ends up centering on the story of a woman, the director struggled for six years to make the film—apparently because numerous male actors turned down the costarring role. She had a difficult time despite her insider status in the industry as the daughter of renowned Indian scriptwriters, Javed Akhtar and the sister of an accomplished film director, actor, producer and singer, Farhan Akhtar. The absence of female centric scripts in main stream Hindi cinema is partially to be blamed because of its commercial viability. Also, commercially super-hit films like Jab We Met(2007) and Paa(2009) are termed as female centric films, but on observing closely, we realize that both the female characters in the end need their male counterpart to overcome their grief or are heavily relied on them to ensure a happy ending to their story. Hindi cinema is divided into ‘trends’ or ‘eras’. Starting from the silent ra in 1920s, Hindi cinema has evolved tremendously in terms of technique, story telling and the stories that were told. The period from late 1940s till 1960s is considered as the ‘Golden era’ of Indian cinema. Bollywood witnessed a new wave in form of content, where earlier movies focused mainly on mythological stories, after independence, their focus shifted on development issues (Do Bigha Zameen- in 1953), gender (Bandini-in 1963), caste di scrimination (Sujata-in 1959), etc. In the early years of Indian cinema, it was Bimal Roy who made a host of films in which his heroines had the lead part to play. Commercial cinema then had female centric scripts and Nutan, Meenakumari, Madhubala and Waheeda Rehman have portrayed some of the most powerful female characters in Hindi cinema and delivered super-hit films. The role played by Zeenat Amaan in the movie (Qurbani-in 1980) was much ahead of its time. It was bold and headstrong unlike of the characters that we seen in the movies of late 90’s. One of the outstabding commercial hits Seeta aur Geeta concentrated more on the heroines rather than the two heroes. Besides such mirrored plots, some movis have focused exclusively on the heroine and woven the script around a central female character. In such films, the woman has no prototype. Jaya Bhaduri’s Guddi was one of the early hits where the innocent girl next door image of a star struck teenager became representative of each school going girl for years to come. In other films like Aandhi, an educated wife changes course midway from a happily married woman to a leading politician. When we compare those films with the films produced during 1990s and later, we can see stark contrast in the way female leads were being portrayed. Not only in their portrayal of the character, but also in the way the content of the movie that was generated. At times or rather most of the times, they were meant to accomplishments to their male counterparts. Shridevi in Lamhe(1991), Madhuri Dixit in Hum Aapke Hain Koun-(1994), Karishma Kapoor in Dil to Paagal Hain-(1997), Fiza-(2000) ,Kajol in Dushman-(1998) and Aishwarya Rai in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam-(1999), Taal-(1999) and Guzaarish-(2010) were some of the most popular leading ladies during this era. Though they were brilliant performers, they hardly were part of a movie where they were not shown adhered to the wishes of the male lead, society and family. It becomes mandatory to ultimately create an image of an ‘ideal’ girl/woman for the audience (here consumers) because that’s how our society works and secondly it becomes easy for that the idea to sell; hence increase in numbers and popularity. Films like â€Å"Dor† (2006), â€Å"Silsilay† (2005), â€Å"Tehzeeb† (2003), â€Å"Pinjar† (2003), â€Å"Chameli† (2003), â€Å"Satta† (2003), â€Å"Filhaal† (2002), â€Å"Zubeidaa† (2001) â€Å"Lajja† (2001), â€Å"Chandni Bar† (2001) and â€Å"Fiza† (2000) brought the woman into the spotlight – all these films got critical acclaim, but they didn't turn out to be a commercial hit. Surprisingly, in recent times, No One Killed Jessica was the only ‘women centric film’ that sort of worked at the box office. All said and done, it shows that we lack on ideas. We as audience are treading backward as we choose to accept only a specific image of woman being shown. Hence, I would focus on a comparative study of two different bollywood era. This will not only comment on the techniques and style of film making, but it will also comment on the kind of cinema accepted by the masses then and now. It will clearly showcase the image of a girl or a woman being shown by the film makers and its acceptance by the audience. It will talk about how issues of gender, caste, development were perceived in Indian cinema then and now. Hence, it will become a cultural comparative study of two different decades from Indian history and will help us understand that how the term ‘Indian Culture’ has evolved over a period of time. George Orwell and William Golding Essay

Orwell and Golding use vastly different writing styles, but their message is the same – that mankind is hopeless. Discuss this statement with reference to both â€Å"Animal Farm† and â€Å"Lord of the Flies†. Since the beginning of time man has struggled to comprehend the difference between good and evil. Our ancestors spent their lives looking for truth, yet none could be found. Is there indeed a good of all goods and an evil of all evils? The two are so similar, and yet so different. The truth is, no one being is perfect, nor were we created to be. No one thing can be the source of all evil, or the source of all good. Yet man battles with himself, to determine what is right. But what, then, is truly right? If there is an evil, then Humans should be deemed to be the most evil of all creatures. We are manipulative, egotistic and dominating. We have the urge to be the dominating force in the universe. We strive for superiority and aim for domination. Yet are such feelings to be considered wrong? Cannot they just be classified as instincts, which many other animals have? No, for we are indeed intelligent creatures and instead of exercising our superiority we should be learning of others greatness. We, as indeed intelligent beings should stray from the common selfishness and anger. Yet, they seem to be much easier to arouse, harder to abolish. In his novel â€Å"Animal Farm†, George Orwell portrays the animals with human-like feelings and emotions. He uses satire to demonstrate the full extent of human emotion. Though the story is about animals, there are very few who think it is just that. The satire gives the story enough appeal to readers, but the message rings as solemn as ever. George Orwell uses little dialogue, but describes the characters and situations with great detail, paying attention to their characters and emotions. It is easier to understand all the happenings, because the characters are animals. At the same time, when one compares them to humans, a striking similarity can be found. The book makes one think, and it hurts when one realizes that the story in the book is not far from our reality. It is a sad reality; however, it is necessary to acknowledge this for one to be able to  overcome it. George Orwell’s message is that humankind is hopeless. Perhaps we are, but a lost cause, we are not. For it is books like these, which help one to understand our faults so that one can correct them as best as one can. We were not created to be perfect, but we were also not created to be dominating and superior. All beings on this planet are created to be equals. Humans have forgotten such principles of nature. Humans battle to overcome cruelty. However, while we believe we have done so, the cruel, dominating and never ending cycle begins again. The truth is we are prisoners of our own characters, and perhaps that can never change. William Golding, the author of â€Å"Lord of the Flies† uses fictional portrayal of human emotional conflict to reach the reader. He takes a situation, which could quite realistically occur in life, and elaborates upon it. He uses complex vocabulary and original sentence structure to show the complexity and variation of human emotions. He uses the little boys as characters in the story to prove a very valid point. The fact that such small children can turn on each other so rapidly is a sobering thought. Golding shows, that no matter how good the intentions are at first, our inner feelings of selfishness can overcome us very easily, especially in a critical situation The book makes the reader contemplate their own actions in such a situation. Whereas as no one can be brutally honest with themselves, it is possible to relate to others. That is what Golding is trying to create. Regardless of whether they planned to do so or not, they will think, and perhaps that may bring us one step closer to understanding a very important character – ourselves. Although their writing styles are prominently different, both George Orwell and William Golding show similar views on the human character. Their honest portrayal of humans as we are by nature leaves the reader thoughtful. So, are we then indeed bound for eternal struggle? Are we indeed as hopeless are the authors suggest? That is one question, which will not be answered with the advance in technology or by new scientific discoveries. We are our own  judges, but can we trust ourselves?

Invasive Species Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Invasive Species - Essay Example Invasive species in certain regions are assumed to threaten the rest of the ecosystem especially those species which have became extinct. It so happens when any specie increases in population it declines the chances of growth for the others. However, this is an assumption as there is no data or researched hypothesis to support these assumptions; extinct species become scarce due to miscellaneous biodiversity factors and due to these their population starts declining in their native regions. Some researchers consider that human interference in the ecosystem has caused this disrupt, either directly or indirectly. Similarly, when ecologist harvested certain species in a foreign environment it also disrupted the biodiversity of the area and numerous species as well. It cannot be exactly claimed what became the cause of threat for extinct species, but there are many unknown factors to humans about the environment and biodiversity of life on Earth. Brown tree snake of Guam is one of the ex ample, which the author discusses in the article. Yet, it is imperial to study the impact of exotic plants, invasive predators and pathogens in a foreign environment as their nourishment and existence will depend on numerous factors in the new environment.Conclusively, it is significant to research, plan, protect, and preserve the extinct species in their native and natural environment as new regions will impact on their growth in an unknown manner and that cannot be ascertained by humans in a rapid manner.
